What Are Ghosts?
What happens when a person dies? Does their spirit go straight to heaven or hell or do they "sleep" for centuries only to be raised again to face the final judgement at the end of time? Could it be that a spirit becomes stuck in limbo on earth as a wandering ghost that is doomed to inhabit haunted buildings and graveyards or does that person just cease to exist? The following verses allude to a destination that is neither heaven nor hell, but a ghostlike world that exists alongside our own reality:
Isaiah 29:4
4 Brought low, you will speak from the ground;
your speech will mumble out of the dust.
Your voice will come ghostlike from the earth;
out of the dust your speech will whisper.
Isaiah 29:4
4 Brought low, you will speak from the ground;
your speech will mumble out of the dust.
Your voice will come ghostlike from the earth;
out of the dust your speech will whisper.
Isaiah 14:9-14
9 The realm of the dead below is all astir to meet you [morning star, son of the dawn] at your coming; it rouses the spirits of the departed to greet you-- all those who were leaders in the world; it makes them rise from their thrones-- all those who were kings over the nations. 10 They will all respond, they will say to you, “You also have become weak, as we are; you have become like us.” 11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave, along with the noise of your harps; maggots are spread out beneath you and worms cover you. Job 15:27-30 27 “Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. 30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away. Proverbs 9:18 18 But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead. Matthew 14:26 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. |
